Kevin Hebert – Director of Bands

Kevin Hebert was named director of Bands of River Bluff High School in July 2019.

Mr. Hebert is from Columbia, SC and an alumnus of Irmo High School. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of South Carolina and received his masters in band conducting from Sam Houston State University through the American Band College program. While at the University of South Carolina, Mr. Hebert served as Vice President of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and was also a member of the 2000 World Champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps. He is a current member of the Palmetto Concert Band and Carolina Wind Symphony.

Before accepting the position at River Bluff High School, Mr. Hebert served as the director of bands at Chapin High School from 2010-2019 and at Bristol Tennessee High School from 2002-2010.

Mr. Hebert is a member of the South Carolina Band Director’s Association, The National Association for Music Education, National Band Association, American School Band Directors Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Mr. Hebert has also been named as one of School Band and Orchestra’s “Americas 50 Band Directors that Make a Difference” both in Tennessee and South Carolina. Mr. Hebert was named the 2015 Chapin High School Teacher of the Year and District Teacher of the Year for Lexington/Richland School District 5.

Assistant Band Director – Josh Hinkel

Mr. Hinkel serves as the Associate Director of Bands at River Bluff High School in Lexington, South Carolina. Ensembles under his direction have received superior ratings at festivals as well as numerous regional, state and circuit championships.  Before coming to River Bluff, Mr. Hinkel served as Director of Bands at Ashley Ridge High School in Summerville, South Carolina, Lake View High School in Lake View, South Carolina and R.H. Rollings Middle School of the Arts in Summerville, South Carolina.  In constant demand as a composer and arranger, his works can be heard from concert halls of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. to the performing venues of Drumcorps International (DCI), Winterguard International (WGI) and Bands of America (BOA). Recently, Mr. Hinkel was the staff arranger for the Coastal Carolina University “Spirit of the Chanticleer” Marching Band and brass arranger for the Cascades Drum and Bugle Corps from Seattle, Washington and Spokane Thunder Drum and Bugle Corps from Spokane, Washington. His marching music affiliations include the Spirit of Atlanta, the Tampa Bay Thunder, Coastal Surge, Racine Scouts in addition to numerous high school and college programs throughout the United States. Currently, he also and is a featured concert band composer with Alfred Publishing from Van Nuys, California.
Mr. Hinkel is a member of the Vic Firth Educational Team. He holds the B.M. in Music Education from the University of South Carolina and the M. Ed in Secondary Education from Coastal Carolina University. Mr. Hinkel’s passion is to create new and exciting music for students of all ages in addition to teaching life-skills, leadership and the art of music making. Assistant Band Director – Aaron Railey

Aaron Railey is a composer, educator, and performer based out of Columbia, South Carolina. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, with an emphasis in percussion performance, from The University of South Carolina where he studied under Dr. Scott Herring. Aaron is currently the Director of Percussion at River Bluff High School in Lexington, SC, and is the Director of Steel Drum Ensembles at Logan Elementary School in Columbia, SC. He and his wife, Caroline, reside in West Columbia, SC.

Versatility is the word that best describes Aaron’s performance abilities. In the genre of concert percussion, he has been a featured soloist on a concert tour throughout China, and also a featured percussion ensemble artist at The Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Aaron has also been heavily involved with the marching arts throughout his career. He has performed with various DCI and WGI groups such as; Spirit of Atlanta, Carolina Crown, and Palmetto Percussion under the direction of DCI and WGI hall of fame members, Chris Lee, Thom Hannum, Lee Beddis, Andrew Markworth, and Chris Hestin. Aaron is also an active steel pan solo artist performing around the state of South Carolina for weddings, parties, and other various events.
As an educator Aaron has an undeniable passion for instilling positive life skills through music. Along with his present positions at Logan Elementary School and River Bluff High School, he is an active clinician across the country, and a devoted private lesson instructor. Ensembles under his direction have consistently placed in the top three at state marching competitions, received superior ratings at concert festivals, and most recently his winter percussion ensemble was named SCBDA State Champion in Division AA.

Aaron is a well-sought after percussion composer and arranger nationwide. He is the owner of PercussionWorks LLC, a company specializing in percussion music designs, live performances and education. His compositions have been heard in college football stadiums, in WGI, in the top concert halls around the world, and in marching band competitions across the country. Aaron is also the resident percussion designer for the music arranging company MarchingBandWorks, under the direction of CEO Joshua V. Hinkel.

Aaron is honored to be an endorsing artist and clinician for The Vic Firth Company, the Percussive Arts Society, and is on the approved artist roster for the South Carolina Arts Commission.

Dr. Jason Sprankle – Piano and Guitar Classes

Dr. Jason Sprankle teaches guitar, piano and music appreciation at RBHS. He is also an adjunct professor at Midlands Technical College teaching music appreciation two nights per week. A graduate of Berlin American High School, in what was once West Berlin, Germany, he performed in rock, blues and variety bands during his four-year residency. He holds degrees from the University of Maryland (AA), Coastal Carolina College (BA), the University of South Carolina (MM) and Boston University (DMA). During his college years, Sprankle was inducted into three honor societies, Omicron Delta Kappa (leadership), Pi Kappa Lambda (music), and Phi Sigma Tau (philosophy). A 20-year veteran in the military, he tours part-time with the 246th Army National Guard Band performing as guitarist, vocalist, and percussionist. Notable performances include shows with Rob Hotchkiss (Train), Don Dannemann (The Cyrcle), Lee Brice, Roger Pemberton, USC Opera, the Southern 500 NASCAR Race, Fall for Greenville Festival, Town Theatre, Workshop Theatre and SC Actor’s Theatre. He is an active member in the SC Music Educator’s Association and served on the executive board for seven years. Also a member of the SC Shakespeare Company, he has appeared onstage in Man of La Mancha, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Much Ado About Nothing, The Three Musketeers, and King Lear. In his free time, Dr. Sprankle enjoys relaxing at the beach with his children and grandchildren.
