River Bluff High Director of Bands Kenneth Turner received The Bandworld Legion of Honor award for 2015 from The John Philip Sousa Foundation.
The Legion of Honor was established in 1989 to annually honor eight of the finest band directors in the United States. Recipients must have at least 15 years of teaching experience, including the development of a superior concert band program. Recipients also must contribute significantly to their profession by demonstrating dedication to concert bands and concert band music.
Turner began his teaching career in 1992 and has served as director of bands at River Bluff High for two years. Turner serves as president of the Palmetto Concert Band and has held various offices with the South Carolina Band Directors Association. Concert bands that Turner directed consistently developed reputations for superior performance.
“My students feed off of my enthusiasm, which I believe is the key to igniting the passion for a subject in anyone,” Turner said. “In short, my students love band because I love band.”
Turner received The Bandworld Legion of Honor award on December 18, 2015, at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, Illinois.
